Each broom begins with a rigorous sorting process, where Erin Rouse, the skilled broom maker, hand-selects the finest broomcorn bristles. These bristles are then soaked, dried, and carefully woven using a broom-making machine from the 1890s. The process is completed with a copper wire wrapping, shaping the bristles into their final form. The handles, made from sustainably sourced maple from the Midwest, are hand-shaped, faceted, and sanded to a silky finish.

The natural flexibility of broomcorn bristles allows these brooms to easily pick up dust, dirt, and hair, unlike plastic alternatives, which can create static. These natural fibers ensure effortless cleaning.

These brooms feature a woven copper wire neck, a waxed flax twine loop for hanging, and a smooth, unfinished handle, exclusively crafted for Housework.

Custodian Studio, led by sculptor-turned-broom maker Erin Rouse, handcrafts each broom with care using sustainably sourced Midwestern wood and domestic broomcorn, all on a 19th-century broom-making machine.
